Bret Mustain, a former high school math teacher with 15 years in education, has joined Sycamore High School as assistant principal for the 2026-27 school year.
Mustain said his first objective is "to build relationships with staff and students," adding that he wants to have personal conversations with both groups, according to an Oct. 19 profile in The Leaf, the school's student newspaper. He described his transition to the 1,678-student school as smooth, noting a "passion for education" across the Sycamore community.
Before arriving at Sycamore High, Mustain worked as a math teacher, department chair, advisor and coach. He holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Ohio State University and a master's in education from Xavier University. According to his school biography, he enjoys cycling, backpacking and cooking.
Asked what advice he would give students, Mustain emphasized three habits: ‘showing up, working hard, and being kind'.
