Milford lost 43-41 to West Clermont on a game-winning touchdown pass as time expired Friday, Sept. 18, at Sharefax Field.

West Clermont quarterback Colton Abner scrambled right from the shotgun, stopped and heaved the ball to the end zone on the final play. Receiver Ethan Davidson and Milford sophomore quarterback Aiden Wehrum went up for the ball at the same time. Davidson came down with it for a 26-yard score, the Clermont Sun reported.

The Eastern Cincinnati Conference loss dropped Milford to 1-4 overall.

Wehrum accounted for all six of the Eagles' touchdowns, with a mix of rushing and passing scores. He opened the scoring with a 5-yard run in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead. He connected with Caylob Brasington on a 6-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter and hit Andrew Lau for a 28-yard score on fourth and 10 in the third.

In a wild fourth quarter, the teams combined for 48 second-half points and seven lead changes in the final 17 minutes and 57 seconds. Wehrum ran 19 yards for a touchdown to put Milford up 33-30 with 5:48 left. West Clermont answered with a 56-yard catch-and-run score to retake the lead at 37-33.

Wehrum responded with a 5-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion to give the Eagles a 41-37 lead with 1:51 remaining.

It was not enough.

West Clermont drove down the field in the final 1:51. Abner ran for 14 yards on second and 15. Running back Caleb Abshire, who finished with a career-high 204 yards on 33 carries, converted on third and 1 with a 4-yard run. Abner connected with Davidson for 13 yards into Milford territory, and Abshire converted again on third and 2.

Abner then broke through the Eagles' defense for a 35-yard run to the 3-yard line with 14 seconds left. A holding penalty pushed the ball back to the 26. Abner scrambled for 13 more yards to the 13 with seven seconds on the clock, setting up the final heave.

"We ran a four verticals concept. Play broke down, and I ran out of the pocket," Abner told the Clermont Sun. "Everything was covered up, but I ended up pulling a safety across the field, and Ethan throttled down; he read my mind … He throttled down and drifted and made a heck of a catch."

Davidson had zero receptions until the fifth-to-last play of the game. His only two catches came on the game-winning drive.

Wehrum entered the Sept. 18 game coming off a 353-yard, four-touchdown passing performance in a 36-35 loss to Loveland in the Eagles' prior game, according to Milford Athletics.

Milford Athletics said on X after the loss that the Eagles play at home against Anderson in their next game.
