Drivers on U.S. Route 50 east of Milford will hit single-lane closures starting Aug. 28, as crews begin clearing sediment from a stream channel beneath the highway bridge.

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) awarded Prus Construction Company a contract of approximately $655,092 to improve the stream channel between Olympic Drive and Klondyke Road, according to an ODOT news release reported by the Clermont Guardian. The City of Milford shared the release on its Facebook page.

Why the work is happening

Sediment has built up in the stream channel beneath the U.S. 50 bridge, creating conditions that cause flooding and roadway overtopping, according to the release. The project will clear that buildup and protect the bridge and embankment from scour, which is erosion caused by fast-moving water undercutting a structure's foundation.

Left unaddressed, scour and sediment buildup can weaken a bridge's supports and force emergency closures or weight restrictions. ODOT classified the work as a stream and bridge preservation project.

What drivers should expect

Lane closures will run 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, with flaggers directing traffic through the work zone. The road will not fully close. No detour route has been announced.

Crews will work as weather permits. ODOT expects the bulk of construction to wrap up by late October or early November. The full project is scheduled for completion by May 2027.
