Marge Simpson once thanked Loveland from a stage, and the moment is preserved in one of the show's most acclaimed episodes.
Ryan Kulik, a writer for the Loveland Daily News, spotlighted the "Sweetheart of Ohio" cameo in a Sept. 3 feature tracing the city's appearances in the long-running animated series.
The confirmed reference comes from "Behind the Laughter," the Season 11 finale that first aired May 21, 2000. The Emmy-winning episode parodies VH1's "Behind the Music," reimagining the Simpson family as a dysfunctional showbiz act. In one montage, Marge performs a nightclub cover of Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff." As the song ends, she turns to the audience: "Thank you, Loveland!"
It is a quick moment, easy to miss. But for residents of a city of about 13,300 people as of the 2020 census, 15 miles northeast of Cincinnati, the name-drop is unmistakable.
Kulik's article also claims a second, more specific reference in "Mother Simpson," a Season 7 episode that aired Nov. 19, 1995. In that episode, Homer's long-lost mother, Mona Simpson, voiced by Glenn Close, is living under a fake identity. Kulik wrote that a fake ID shown on screen lists "Loveland, Ohio" as her hometown.
That claim does not match all available records. The Simpsons Archive, a long-running fan site that catalogs freeze-frame details, transcribes the Ohio license as reading "610 Shawnee Dr. Lovelace, Ohio" under the name "Penelope Olsen." "Lovelace" and "Loveland" are close. They are not the same word.
Whether the on-screen text actually reads "Loveland" or "Lovelace" would require a frame-by-frame check of the original episode. Neither claim has been checked against the footage.
The first reference, Marge's shoutout, stands on firmer ground. "Behind the Laughter" has been widely cataloged, and the spoken line is audible, not a freeze-frame reading.
With more than 700 episodes aired over three decades, The Simpsons writers have name-dropped towns across the country. Kulik wrote that Loveland's "instantly recognizable and charming name" may have contributed to its inclusion.
"Not bad for a town of our size," Kulik wrote in the Sept. 3 article.
