Miami Township Fire & EMS hired two full-time firefighter/paramedics, swearing them in at the township's regular trustee meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
Mathew Leeper and Corey Spitznagel took their oaths before the three-member Miami Township Board of Trustees, the department announced in a Facebook post, according to the Clermont Guardian. Trustees Mary Makley Wolff, Ken Tracy and Mark Schulte presided over the ceremony.
The two join a department of more than 60 full-time personnel, plus part-time and volunteer staff, according to the department. That crew staffs four stations around the clock across the township.
Station 28 on U.S. 50 in Perintown serves the township’s southern area, while Station 29 on Sugar Camp Road in Day Heights serves its eastern area. Station 26 on McPicken Drive near state Route 28 serves the central area, and Station 27 on Branch Hill Guinea Pike serves the north.
Most full-time firefighters work 24-hour shifts followed by 48 hours off, the department said. All must meet Ohio's minimum certification standards for firefighters and emergency medical technicians (EMTs), with most also holding paramedic credentials.
Beyond firefighting and emergency medical response, Miami Township Fire & EMS handles fire safety inspections, community paramedicine, hydrant maintenance, juvenile fire-setter counseling and public safety education for schools, businesses and seniors, according to the department.
