A $4.6 million overhaul of Loveland-Madeira Road is headed for construction in 2027, new sidewalks are already going in along the same corridor, and the city's rebuilt downtown fire station opened in May. Together, the projects will reshape much of Loveland's primary north-south corridor over the next two years.
Loveland-Madeira Road Phase 1: roundabout, pathways, lighting
The City of Loveland secured a $4.6 million grant from the OKI Regional Council of Governments to rebuild Loveland-Madeira Road from West Loveland Avenue to just past Valley View Lane, according to the city's construction projects page updated July 19.
The centerpiece is a new roundabout at Valley View Lane, which will provide direct access to the 8.35-acre Chestnut Street Property, a mixed-use industrial site with rail access. The project also includes shared-use pedestrian and bike pathways, streetscape enhancements, stormwater tree wells, conduit for future utility relocations, and new street lighting.
The road carries roughly 12,000 to 13,200 vehicles per day and saw 20 crashes between 2020 and 2022 in the stretch between Loveland Avenue and Miamiview Drive, according to a ChoiceOne Engineering presentation prepared for the city. Sections of the corridor lack any sidewalk, and the road has a large number of driveway curb cuts.
Design and engineering work has been underway since 2024 and is scheduled to wrap up in 2026. Construction is anticipated to start in 2027. Additional phases will eventually extend improvements south to the city limits near the Kroger and Castle Skateland area, though Phase 2 was described as delayed to 2028 on a March 26 episode of the Let's Talk Clermont podcast. The city's construction projects page, as of July 19, does not reflect that timeline.
Sidewalks already under construction
Closer to the city's southern edge, a separate ODOT Systematic Safety Grant is funding new sidewalks along Loveland-Madeira Road from the city limit near the Public Works facility to approximately the Oasis Turf & Tree/Kroger/Castle Skateland area. Construction began in April 2026.
The total project cost is $283,191, with ODOT covering $254,872. The city's local share is roughly $28,319. The project fills a gap identified in Loveland's 2022 Comprehensive Master Plan, which flagged walkability as a citywide priority. Once complete, the sidewalks will connect the Stoneybrook neighborhood, River Ridge Apartments, and Deer Creek Apartments to the broader corridor.
Fire Station 63: open and dedicated
The new Chief Otto J. Huber Fire Station 63, at 220 E. Loveland Ave., was dedicated May 30 in a ceremony that included a procession from the former station and a traditional hose-coupling ceremony. Construction began in November 2024.
The facility spans more than 10,000 square feet and replaces the department's longtime firehouse at East Loveland Avenue and State Route 48. It features multiple apparatus bays, updated living quarters, training areas, and enhanced equipment storage. City officials determined that renovating the aging station would not meet modern operational needs. The new layout allows emergency vehicles to enter and exit more efficiently, reducing response times.
The station is named for longtime Fire Chief Otto J. Huber.
