Miami Township trustees will consider a culvert rehabilitation, engineering for a second culvert replacement and a grant application toward a fire engine costing up to $1 million at their Tuesday, Oct. 20, business meeting. The meeting will also include the swearing-in of two firefighter/paramedics.
Mathew Leeper and Corey Spitznagel will be sworn into Miami Township Fire & EMS at the 7 p.m. session in the Trustee Meeting Room at 6101 Meijer Drive in Milford, according to the township's meeting agenda.
The board also faces votes on two culvert projects triggered by sinkholes.
A sinkhole reported at 275 Beech Road in late August led the service department to discover rust holes in a 42-inch culvert running under the road. Service Director Chris Burdsall wrote in a memo that the holes were "just big enough to allow material to be pulled through the holes during rainstorms." Crews patched the road. The culvert still needs permanent repair. Trustees will consider a $29,909 proposal from National Gunite to install a shotcrete lining through the 100-foot culvert.
A second sinkhole at 5462 Bailey Drive revealed an 18-inch concrete stormwater culvert with separated joints and a four-foot failed section. Burdsall wrote that the culvert sits more than 10 feet deep on the outlet side, with underground utilities nearby, making a simple swap impossible. Trustees will vote on a $13,300 engineering agreement with Choice One Engineering for survey and construction plans.
Fire Chief Dave Jetter is requesting approval to apply for a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) grant to replace Engine 13, a 2007 E-ONE reserve engine with roughly 8,800 engine hours and 102,000 miles. The replacement apparatus could cost up to $1 million. If awarded, the grant would cover 35% to 45% of that cost, leaving the township responsible for $550,000 to $650,000. The application deadline is Jan. 22, 2027, with awards expected in July 2027.
Trustees will also vote on two resolutions advancing grant-funded pedestrian crossing projects on Branch Hill Guinea Pike. One project, at the intersection with Loveland Miamiville Road, was awarded through OKI grant funds and is slated for 2029. The second, at Jer-Les Drive, would extend sidewalk to Boyd E. Smith Elementary and add a crosswalk, funded through ODOT's Safe Routes to Schools Program, with construction set to begin in 2027. Township Administrator Stephen M. Kelly wrote that the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) needs the resolutions passed locally before the projects can proceed.
Other agenda items include a $76,185 Bobcat T66 skid steer purchase to replace a 2018 model, a $56,918 contract for wallpaper removal and repainting on the recreation side of the Civic Center, and approval of $1,787,327 in township bills covering Sept. 15 through Oct. 13.
The board will enter executive session to discuss employee compensation and confidential economic development information. The meeting is open to the public, with a comment period before the closed session. Residents needing accommodations can call the township at 513-248-3725 at least 72 hours before the meeting.
